choose your own adventure entertainment with the rise of generative media

December 26, 2025

One of the things I am very excited about around generative media is not around being able to generate realistic images or short videos, but more around how it will evolve different entertainment types like movies and video games.

While it might not happen in the short term (because I imagine it to be fairly non-trivial and also extremely costly), with generative media, we open up the world of choose your own adventure experiences in entertainment.

  • In the movie (or even tv show) world, it might allow viewers to be able to change the plot of what they are watching by having the opportunity to prompt or make requests at certain points while they are watching. This would lead to in-the-moment generation of the rest of the movie or show which would fork the experience into its own version, based on the viewer themselves.
  • In the gaming world, developers have tried different flavors of these in games like Hogwarts Legacy or Detroit: Become Human where the player is able to make decisions at certain points of the game, and also in open world games like Zelda or GTA where the user doesn’t have to follow a linear campaign path while playing.

One other interesting outcome of this I expect is for a new layer to exist on top of entertainment where people can share their forked version of a movie or a game, and have others who might be interested to load and watch or play those. This might lead to a whole new creator economy on top of entertainment.
